Trustnames stance against spam is clear, and we review and resolve all spam complaints in accordance with our Spam Policy, Domain Registration Agreement, and Acceptable Use Policy.
The Whois Dilemma And Spam
As an ICANN-accredited registrar, Trustname is required to list the contact information (including email addresses) associated with the domain name in the public Whois database.
This requirement is the most significant enabler of spam, as many spammers now have an ever-growing list of valid email addresses to which they can send unsolicited emails. This also drives domain holders to provide false contact information to Registrars when registering their domains, violating ICANN’s Whois Accuracy Program.
Our Solution: Whois Privacy Protection
To solve this dilemma and prevent spammers from harvesting domain information (while adhering to ICANN agreements), Trustname allows domain registrars to decide not to show their confirmed email addresses and other contact information in the Whois database.
Instead, email aliases are provided by our proxy partner companies, Perfect Privacy LLC. and Whois Privacy Protection Services, and these details (already verified) are listed in the Whois database.
This System Works In Three Steps
- Alias emails accept mail messages.
- The messages are filtered for spam, and all mail determined to be spam is discarded.
- All clean emails are forwarded to your actual email address.
As an ICANN-accredited registrar, Trustname is required to accept and investigate all reports of inaccurate domain information listed in our Whois database. To prevent inaccurate Whois information and comply with ICANN regulations, Trustname uses a filtering system that flags potentially erroneous information for more detailed review.
If you decide to use Trustnames Two-Tier Privacy Protection, we will list Perfect Privacy LLC as the registrant on paper; however, you retain complete control over your domain. You won’t need to verify your contact information, as these details are verified and legit.
Policy And Security Measures
To prevent spammers who have been caught from covering their tracks, Trustname does not provide a way for our customers to delete their domain registrations. Spammers usually delete domain names they are using before they get flagged and action is taken against them, with the hopes of re-registering the domain at a new Registrar.
Port 25 (used for non-encrypted communications) is forced to Trustnames local SMTP mail servers first. This requirement enables Trustnames spam filtering system to monitor mail for potential spamming indicators closely.
How We Filter And Mark Spam
Trustname also provides a similar mail filtering service to all customers who use our parking, hosting, and Internet access services. All mail received by any of our customers is compared with a list of known spammers, and these are filtered out before delivery.
Any email that has been flagged as spam is marked by inserting *****SPAM***** into the message subject. This allows the customer to create a rule that automatically handles these emails, and most email clients also filter them out.
While Trustnames spam filtering systems are effective at fighting spam, they are still not perfect. However, at Trustname, we continue to develop our spam detection filters to ensure as few unsolicited emails as possible reach you.
